Elements of Art...or the things we use to make a work of art
Line- a path made by a moving point
Shape- an area defined by its outline, geometric or organic
Color- hues on a spectrum; we use a color wheel made of primary, secondary and intermediate colors
Value- the lightness or darkness of an object
Form- a three-dimensional shape
Texture- the way something feels or appears to feel
Space- the illusion of depth in an artwork
Principles of Design...or what we do with the elements to create a work of art
Balance- the distribution of visual weight in a work of art
Movement- the path on which an artist directs his viewer through his art work
Rhythm- the repitition of visual movement of the elements
Contrast- the differences in values, textures, shapes, and the other elements
Emphasis- the creation of dominance and focus using an element or elements
Pattern- using the art elements in planned or random repitions to enhance works of art
Unity- provides the cohesive feel when all the elements in a work look as though they belong together
Media- materials used to make art
Most of the art we make in our classroom is one, or a combination of, the following:
Drawing: pencil, marker, pastel, chalk, charcoal
Painting: tempera, watercolor, acrylic
Printmaking: transferring ink or paint from a stamp or plate to a surface, usually paper
Collage: shapes that are cut and pasted to a surface
Sculpture: clay, metal, cardboard, rigid wrap, foil, natural or other 3-D materials
Textiles: stitchery, sewing, weaving
Technology: photography, computer
