On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, Mayor Thomas Micozzie visited St. Bernadette’s 4th & 5th graders to discuss different aspects of local government and to cast his vote in the classes “Candy Bar Election.”
“This special visit is timed perfectly with what we are learning in class,” said Mrs. Lisa Carney, the 4th grade teacher. “We recently had a field trip to Harrisburg where we toured the State Capitol and saw the Senate Floor in action. Now we are learning about the election process.”
She had real voting boxes that 1st-5th graders used to cast their votes for one of two candy bars. The 4th graders wrote speeches for their “candidates” and the 5th graders conducted interviews with the 4th graders to convince other students – and Mr. Mayor – to vote for their choice of confectionary leader. Mrs. Carney said it’s a great collaborative project among the classes and is proud to be able to share it with Mayor Micozzie.
The students sang a beautiful version of “America the Beautiful” that can be seen here: http://vimeo.com/95327165 (It took them less than a week to put this together with the help of 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Tsakiris!)
The final votes have been tallied and the Hershey's Bar was declared the winner.
