St. Bernadette's Elementary School Program (grades 1-4) helps children develop the fundamental skills and knowledge areas in a supportive environment, enabling them to achieve academic success. Using benchmark testing in reading, the Fundations Reading Program, and the Journeys Reading Series, great emphasis is placed on developing fluent readers with strong comprehension skills. Additionally, expressive and receptive vocabulary is developed using multi-discipline text and student-based projects and presentations. To ensure that essential reading skills are developed and mastered in the early educational years, reading support is available for students in need.
Early math concepts are taught using hands-on learning. There is a special emphasis on building strong foundations. Students advance their technological skills and are encouraged to become confident, life-long learners. Acadience Reading (formerly Dibbles) is a set of standardized indicators of literacy skills. It is designed for screening and monitoring the progress of students. Acadience Reading ensures reading success and improves reading outcomes for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. St. Bernadette School's teachers use this benchmark data to plan large and small group instruction in order to meet the needs of our young readers. Benchmark testing is administered to students in September, January, and May. Progress Monitoring is put in place as needed.
