________________________________________________________________________________________________________The Juggler of Notre Dame
The story of The Juggler of Notre Dame traces back to Medieval France. In 1892, author Anatole France published this miracle story under the title, Le Jongleur de Notre Dame which translates as The Juggler of Notre Dame. Over the years, this story has been adapted, particularly for children’s books, TV and film:
1904- Our Lady’s Tumbler by Isabel Butler
1917, The Little Juggler, by Violet Morre Higgins
1942, MGM filmed The Greatest Gift
1953, The Juggler of Our Lady by R. O. Blechman
1960- made for TV The Young Juggler
1974, The Clown of God authored and illustrated by Tomie dePaola
1982, The Juggler of Notre Dame, a modernized film adaptation of the original story.
The story of The Juggler of Notre Dame portrayed a very talented juggler named Barnabe who had tired of wandering up and down the roads of France to make a living. He decided to dedicate his life to God. He entered a monastery and for a short time was a very happy monk. However, the monastery had a custom of using each monk’s gift to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and through her, honor her Son. One monk would write poetry, another would sculpt, another would paint. The monastery was filled with many talented monks. Barnabe felt that he had nothing to offer Mary. His lack of confidence made him very sad. One day, however, he became inspired. Maybe he did have a gift which he could offer to the Blessed Mother! Over time, Barnabe’s happiness returned. The Prior of the monastery noticed this change, too. But he wondered why Barnabe would also disappear for about an hour each day. One day, the Prior decided to follow Barnabe. Barnabe entered the chapel and proceeded up the aisle to the statue of Our Lady. He knelt before her, pulled things out of a bag and then performed his juggling tricks in front of the statue. He had indeed found his gift. The Prior, however, was horrified that Barnabe was juggling in the sacred chapel and in front of Our Lady! He left the chapel to report this sacrilege to the Abbot of the monastery. Both the Prior and Abbot returned immediately. What they witnessed upon arrival, however, was a most amazing sight. The statue of Our Lady had come to life. With a beautiful smile on her face and an outstretched hand, the Blessed Mother reached down and wiped the sweat off the brow of the Juggler who performed for her. The moral of this story is quite simple: when we use our God-given gifts for the glory of God, God is pleased and fills us with joy.
