To begin with, draw any of the following shapes on a sheet of paper:
Lines, Circles, Squares/Rectangles (quadrilaterals) or Triangles.
The shapes can be as big, small or as numerous as you like. You might even only want to use one shape! Once you have created your images, click on Kandisky. Kandinsky is a beautifully simple ‘experiment’, all you have to do is draw! Copy your original pictures into Kandinsky, then hit play.
What do you notice about the different sounds produced? Do the shapes all make the same sound? What is the difference between larger shapes? What happens when you draw shapes higher or lower on the screen? Please answer these questions and send them to me: [email protected]
Change the colour scheme and see what you think now!
Extra-Credit: Look into the life and work of Kandinsky

Listening Assignment: For this assignment you will need a pencil and a notebook. Spring is here, and most of you probably have a backyard: Go outside and record or simply list sounds that you hear. It maybe an airplane passing by, a bird singing, a neighbor mowing his lawn, or a baby crying. Write down how many things you hear in a ten-minute period. I think you will be surprised at how much there was going on in your neighborhood that you weren’t even aware of. Extra credit if you add descriptions to each sound. (For example- an airplane was flying by and it made a very low-pitched sound for about ten seconds) Otherwise, it can simply be a one word list such as- (airplane, baby, woman on the telephone, couple walking by, etc).
Send the list or descriptions to: [email protected]

****Grades 4-8 will be graded. Instead of the usual grades out on a scale of 100, our distance learning projects will be graded on a scale of 1-4, aligned with what you typically see on your report card. This grading scale will allow for appropriate feedback and hold students accountable, but will also allow for some flexibility as we are all working in new environment.

Pre-K to 2nd Grade:
Choose from one activity below. When you are finished, ask one of your parents to take a picture of it and send it to me. This is not required but optional. Send to: [email protected]
1) Make a homemade guitar with simple objects you have at home. Rubber bands, paper towel tube, empty tissue box, paint, stickers, any decorative item, construction paper, and glue is all you need. If you have different size rubber bands, even better, they will make different pitches in sound. Click on the wikihow link to see step-by-step how to do this at home.

5th and 6th Grade:
Pick one activity from your Google Classroom page and practice it for the week. After you have learned your assignment, try it in different rooms in the house and observe the difference in resonance. Notice if a room resonates more if it is large and filled with lots of furniture and carpet, verses a somewhat small and bare room such as the bathroom. Notice whether the ceiling height, or size of the room makes a difference in the sound. Put your observations down on paper and post it to your classroom page. This assignment needs to be 4 sentences or more.
