Pre-K and Kindergarten classes have fun building art skills while exploring the elements of art--line, shape, color, form, space, texture, and value--through a variety of materials. Lessons are often inspired by artists, art from history, books or videos, as well as the world around us.
In grades 1-5, students grow in every way, and it's exciting to see their artistic development. Students build on their skills, explore new materials and techniques, learn about a variety of current and historical artists, and continue to express their own creativity.
As students in grades 6-8 become more aware of their own interests and abilities, the importance of continuing to learn and explore in art takes new directions. Students experience a variety of techniques and materials that allow them to express themselves in diverse ways. Students continue to learn about current and historical artists, look at art from various cultures and styles, and buid on our work with the elements of art and the principles of design.
The Music curriculum of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is designed to broaden a student’s general knowledge of basic musical skills and concepts at all levels of elementary education. Through participation in the music program, students are lead in a deeper appreciation of liturgy, ethnic cultures, and musical styles. Music holds a prominent place in the spectrum of Arts and is of paramount importance in the development of the whole child.
Students in 3rd – 8th grade may learn how to play an instrument during the school day. Third grade students begin with the string instruments, Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass or Bass. Starting in 4th grade, students can also learn how to play Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone, Drums, Bells, Oboe and the string instruments. The Band/Orchestra meets for group lessons, separated by instrument/ability once a week during the school day, and a rehearsal during lunch recess for the beginning Instruments, and before school for the Advanced Students. The students learn how to read music as well as playing their instrument. The ensembles perform two concerts a year, a winter and spring concert. The Advanced Students do have the opportunity to audition for the Archdiocese, and Northeastern Music Honor Bands as well as performing at the National Catholic Band Association Festival held at Villanova. Instruction is provided by Northeastern Music Programs for a fee.
